Card Making

I have always received a great deal of joy from creating beautiful things…. out of nothing. So, for me, the limitless possibilities of fun shapes I can engineer and cut with my digital cutting machine is super exciting!! Seriously…to be able to load a sheet of paper into my Silhouette and then have it magically cut the sheet perfectly so that it folds up into a beautiful card (or box or whatever) is nothing short of a miracle! The end result is an awesome project handmade by me that brings a smile to someone’s face. And, to me that’s absolutely amazing!

I’ve designed quite a collection of cards over the past couple of years that are available at the Silhouette Online Store. I thought I’d take the opportunity today to post several of them all in one place so you can see them, use them for assembly reference, and hopefully get some good ideas! Even if you don’t have a cutting machine, hopefully you can glean some ideas from this post.

Card making is something I really love to do. I’ve designed several card kits and card projects over the years. One of the first card projects I worked on as a graphic designer was “The Ultimate Card Kit” by Lisa Bearnson. Right then and there I was seriously hooked on engineering cards. Cards are easy to assemble and go together very quickly. Homemade cards certainly don’t need to be a sheet of cardstock folded in half. Try making a card out of a circle, scalloped shape, or a bracket shape. You can create them out of just a few supplies that you most likely already have on hand. Use ribbon, stamps, brads, buttons, and flowers to embellish your cards. And, the best part… when you give your card away you are making the world a more beautiful and cheerful place. So, go give it a whirl and make someone happy today!

  1. Hi Lori!

Glad I found your blog again! We “worked” together at Little Dreamer Designs for a while. I’ve always loved your Silhouette shapes, they’re my favorites from the Silhouette store! I actually used one of the card shapes above and made a card last year with it. You can see it here: http://www.listgirl.com/2010/02/he-doesnt-look-day-older-than-29.html

This year I started using the Amber Edition of Project Life. I was so excited when I found out that you designed it! 🙂 You are so creative and inspiring!

  2. Hello. I am looking for a digital bracket scallop that I can download and use any time. If you can help me locate one I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

  3. Hi Lori,
It’s the first time for me to go to your blog and actually see all of your works. OMG, I haven’t been able to touch my Silhouette machine which I bought two years ago because I don’t know how to use it to its optimum. I really have to start learning how to use it.
Going thru all the cards you have designed wants me to go into card making again. I’ve been deferring it because I find using the machine too complicated. But there’s always a first time and I guess it takes a lot of patience to be able to learn how to use the Silhouette machine. I’ve bought some of your designs since I bought the machine, it’s just a matter of me taking time to sit down and start working on my cards.
I am from the Philippines and I got sick of cancer in 2008 (breast cancer) then in 2010 was stricken again with lung cancer. I’m a survivor of both, praise God and and I have just retired this January. I’m busy with my social activities and my condition is stable, again, I praise and thank God for His healing mercies.
I’ve always said I’ll start doing my gift cards but never got around to doing it. But looking at your works has inspired me to do it again. (By the way, I started with this gift card making hobby in 2008 and was using Cuttlebug. Momo’s video has inspired me to do similar creations she has made.) My mood dictates my ability to dabble into this hobby. I hope to learn to use my Silhouette soonest.
Thanks for sharing your gift card designs.
    Regards,

    Cherry Layug

  5. Hello Lori! I write you from Spain.
I just cutted the curved flap pocket card kit, that I bought in Silhoutte Designs Shop but I can’t understand how to mount it. If you have and email I can send to you some photo, but, or the cut has no sense or I can’t understand how to do to mount it having some sense. Do you have some video o some images to take instructions to do it? I look in you where but I only see an image like in the Silhouette shop and with this image I can’t understand How to glue the pieces.

    Thanks in advance
    Best regards
    Tat
